The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have posted updates to ICD-10 codes that will be effective October 1, 2023. In addition, CMS has posted the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) ICD-10 code mappings updates that will also be effective on October 1, 2023, for the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Prospective Payment System (PPS).
This year’s update includes several code categories. Some of the codes are entirely new, while others are being deleted and replaced. It is important to note the new and replacement codes should not be used for dates of service before October 1, 2023 and deleted codes will be invalid after September 30, 2023.
Of particular significance is the replacement of the G20 Parkinson’s Disease ICD-10 code with the following five new ICD-10 codes:
- G20A1 Parkinson's disease without dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations
- G20A2 Parkinson's disease without dyskinesia, with fluctuations
- G20B1 Parkinson's disease with dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations
- G20B2 Parkinson's disease with dyskinesia, with fluctuations
- G20C Parkinsonism, unspecified
These five new Parkinson’s Disease codes have also been newly mapped as Dysphagia Comorbidities for the Speech-Language Pathology Comorbidities for PDPM.
Among the code updates, there are new ICD-10 codes for osteoporosis with a current pathological fracture and replacement Z-codes (Factors influencing health status and contact with health services) for some of the caregiver treatment regimen compliance codes.
